The Bristol City government and the Bristol Herald Courier have little love for each other. In 2008 (as of February) They have published the salaries of public employees and exposed what seems a pattern of nepotism at the City owned utility.
Bristol Herald Courier came in 1865. That was the year John Slack founded the Bristol News, a publication which continued until after the turn of the century. In 1870, Slack launched the Bristol Courier, a weekly which became Bristol's first daily paper in 1888.

In 1986, after 36 years of home deliveries, the Bristol Virginia-Tennessean succumbed to the trend of dying afternoon newspapers and was combined with the morning editions of the Bristol Herald Courier. The combined morning publication with three editions covered and circulated in nine Southwest Virginia counties, Upper East Tennessee and the City of Bristol.
LEONARD, HERALD L. "TED" Herald L. "Ted" Leonard, 80, of 18137 Margay Drive, Bristol, VA, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, in NHC Health Care Center. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol Virginia and retired from the Bristol Door and Lumber Company. He was a member of the Gum Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Ardis Barker Leonard; five daughters, Janice Eldreth and Mrs. Steve (Diana) Hardin, both of Bristol Virginia, Mrs. Ron (Pat) Price, Abingdon, Mrs. Tommy (Wava) McNally, Kingsport, and Mrs. Jim (Jean) Klingensmith, Goldvein, VA; three sons, G.T. Leonard, Jack Leonard and David Leonard, all of Bristol VA; two sisters, Agnes Hughes and Lois Tate, both of Bristol VA; two brothers, Ralph Leonard, Bristol VA, and Rufus Leonard, Big Stone Gap; 23 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.
