One of the highlights was the Feb. 8 Christie’s $10.6 million sale of an Andy Warhol painting of Brigitte Bardot. Though not a record price for the artist (that distinction goes to Warhol’s Mao that sold for $17.3 million at Christie’s, New York in November 2006), it is a significant sale for several reasons. Strong prices for Warhol are a good barometer for the art market in general. Also, it was just last year that another Bardot painting from the same Warhol series sold for the relatively sane price of $3 million at auction. The jaw-dropping jump from $3 million to $10 million in nine months surprised even the most jaded art world insiders.
