For public consumption, Brian Mulroney has been the very model of political decorum. When Joe Clark was being bludgeoned in the public opinion polls, when many Tories were sniffing around for well-paying government jobs in anticipation of even worse days to come and when the editorial writers were writing off the Conservative leader with sniping little "Joe Whos," Brian Mulroney refused to be drawn in with the doomsayers. He was invariably polite when the reporters called, sometimes as many as a dozen of them in a single day, but he was ... firm: he had nothing to say.

Brian Mulroney's policies were virtually indistinguishable from those of the Liberals, and most of his government's "crises" were over personal, rather than serious policy issues. It is one thing to drop to 23% popularity because of the bold, new, unpopular initiatives one has taken, but quite another to do so on the basis of petty graft and a "do-nothing" policy. There is often nothing better than stating one's position strongly, and sticking to one's guns, as Ronald Reagan's two-term triumph has shown. He proved to be one of the most successful democratic politicians of the Twentieth Century.

Shortly after leaving office in 1993, Brian Mulroney accepted an envelope containing $100,000 in cash from Karlheinz Schreiber, a promoter who had once successfully lobbied his government on the matter of a contract involving Air Canada and Airbus. The transaction was not in itself illegal. No evidence has emerged to suggest it had anything to do with Schreiber 's previous lobbying efforts. But especially given the many recent revelations about the culture of corruption in Liberal Ottawa, Mulroney's reluctance to explain his relationship with Schreiber has continued to cloud Mulroney's reputation. Many ask: Was the conduct of the last Conservative PM beyond reproach?

Brian Mulroney was born on March 20, 1939. As the love-child of Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin (before the operation), Mulroney was unwelcome in most countries and therefore spent much of his life at sea. It was a rough life, but he managed to make ends meet by selling child slaves and illegal nuclear arms. After a hard day's work, Mulroney would sometime kill a puppy for fun, running his blood soaked fingers through his thick black beard and laughing manically.
