B[R]ent Stait grew up in The Pas and in Flin Flon, Manitoba and like most young Canadian boys he spent most of his spare time playing hockey. At 18 he went to work in the mines for the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. A year later he spent a summer at the Banff School of Fine Arts and then moved to Toronto to study acting at the Ryerson Theatre School. After Ryerson, Brent worked at the Stratford Festival spending three years there performing and perfecting his craft. He still performs on stage when he isn't working in film or television.

Rev Bem (Brent Stait) receives an urgent call from his friend, Brother Thaddeus Blake (Mark Holden), a Wayist, in need of help for his people whose settlement will be destroyed by slavers.
