Brendan Gaughan: Races

Gaughan Looking for a Little Luck Gaughan says there is no better place to change his luck than Indianapolis, where he has a best finish of fourth in 2003 and an eighth-place finish in 2005. Although a self-proclaimed “hater” of short tracks, O'Reilly Raceway Park has qualities that Gaughan loves. And with the South Point Racing team's ever improving short track program, Gaughan is looking forward to a top finish by his No. 77 Chevrolet Silverado.
With a win under his belt, Gaughan opted for more off-road racing in the Southern Nevada Off- Road Enthusiasts (SNORE) tour. Gaughan and teammate J.C. Dean quickly turned heads as the duo racked up more wins and scored three consecutive Class 10 championships from 1991 to 1994.
Gaughan said the competition in the truck series is fantastic, but the fields are smaller, and at the end of a race usually only seven to 12 competitors are on the lead lap. In NEXTEL Cup races, usually there are 25 to 30 cars still on the same lap with the winner at the checkered flag.
Gaughan will fill that role, a team spokesman said Wednesday. Gaughan is currently without a NASCAR ride after his South Point Racing team in the Craftsman Truck Series closed down after a failed merger with Wyler Racing in the offseason.

Gaughan picked up the maximum 185 points, widening his lead by 25 points over Travis Kvapil. With five races remaining, the former college roommate of NBA superstar Allen Iverson has 3,151 points and a 67-point lead.
In 2004, Gaughan moved up to the Cup Series to drive the No. 77 Kodak Dodge for Penske-Jasper Racing. He finished second in the Rookie of the Year standings after posting four top-10s.
