Gaughan cancels Vegas: Brendan Gaughan [#62] has cancelled his NASCAR Winston Cup test next week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gaughan, who will be running a full NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule this year, said he will not attempt to qualify for the March 3 UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 Winston Cup race at LVMS because his Orleans Racing team is concentrating on the truck program.(Las Vegas Sun)(1-26-2002)

Today, Gaughan continues to support his school with regular visits and monetary donations. In fact, just last season Gaughan ran a special Georgetown University paint scheme on his No. 77 truck. The truck was unveiled at a Georgetown football game in which Coach Thompson attended. Gaughan raced the truck at New Hampshire International Speedway, donating all his winnings from that race back to the University where he learned many life lessons.
Gaughan is the only driver with more than one Bud Pole Award on the Las Vegas superspeedway. He won one in the fall event in 1999 and another in the only series visit to the track in 2000. Drivers with a single Bud Pole Award on the big track include Schrader, 1996; Sammy Potashnick, 1997; Kenny Wallace, 1997; Harvick, 1998; Mike Chase, 1998; Nadeau, 1999; and Jon Wood, 2001.

[F]ar, Gaughan's instincts have yet to steer him wrong, and his rookie season in NASCAR's top league has gone reasonably well. Unlike his Penske teammates--Ryan Newman and Rusty Wallace--Gaughan has managed to stay out of the wrecks, but his best finish has only been a mid-pack 19th at the Daytona 500. Still, Wilson has high hopes for their return to Las Vegas.
Gaughan averaged 154.044 mph in the Sears 200, his second consecutive victory and fourth in the last seven races. The speed easily eclipsed the previous record of 144.260 by Kurt Busch at California Speedway in 2000.
Gaughan will sport a special Georgetown University paint scheme on his No. 77 Chevrolet Silverado. The Las Vegas native attended Georgetown University and graduated in 1997 with a degree in business management.
