Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is not a religion. It is a means to an end, a healthy and happy baby. That is the goal, a healthy and happy child, not for mother to be able to brag at the La Leche meeting. Anyone who loses sight of the true goal of breastfeeding and slips into the religious advocacy mode will suffer inevitable consequences.

Breastfeeding ... has benefits for you. It's clean and simple--you don't have to wash bottles or mix formula. It's cheaper than using formula. It helps your uterus contract back to normal size after having been stretched during pregnancy. It delays the return of your periods (though you shouldn't count on it to prevent pregnancy). And it helps make time for you to be close to your baby.

Breastfeeding can begin immediately after the baby is born. In most maternity wards babies can be put on their mother's stomach straight after birth. This first close contact greatly promotes breastfeeding. Immediately after birth the baby is often awake. It eagerly searches for the breast and wants to suckle. The baby can be helped by carefully supporting it under the soles of its feet so it can crawl or push itself up from the stomach and all the way to the breast.

Breastfeeding can affect family relationships. While some partners may feel left out when the mother is feeding the baby, others find breastfeeding strengthens family bonds. Looking after a new baby and breastfeeding take time. This can add pressure to the family, as the partner has to care for the mother as well as doing tasks she would otherwise do. However, as partners are often very willing to give this support, this pressure can help to strengthen the couple's pair bond and ... to build the paternal bond to the new member of the family.[48]

Breastfeeding is the natural way to feed your newborn. Still, you may need time to practice it. Like all aspects of motherhood, you'll learn through experience, and not through instinct. Don't be afraid to ask for help or advice from health professionals or experienced friends and relatives.
