Along with Argentina, Chile, and the U.S., Brazil is one of the guarantors of the Peru-Ecuador peace process. Brazil is a charter member of the United Nations and participates in its specialized agencies. It has contributed troops to UN peacekeeping efforts in the Middle East, the former Belgian Congo, Cyprus, Mozambique, Angola, East Timor, and most recently Haiti. Brazil is currently leading the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti. Brazil served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from 2004-2005. Prior to this, it had been a member of the UN Security Council eight times.

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VIVO today announced Brazil's first CDMA2000 1xEV-DO service on its Motorola -supplied network in Curitiba, Parana State. As part of an agreement with Motorola Industrial Ltda, the Brazilian subsidiary of Motorola, Inc., to support this CDMA2000 1xEV-DO trial, Motorola is providing network hardware, software, and deployment services. It is upgrading existing Motorola Base Transceiver Subsystems (BTS) with the addition of a new Multi-Channel CDMA Module to enable CDMA2000 1xEV-DO service.

Last month, the Brazilian National Biosafety Technical Committee's (CTNBio) approved Monsanto's MON 810 insect protection event, known in the United States as YieldGard® Corn Borer, for future commercial use in corn in Brazil. The CTNBio approval may be followed by a review from the National Biosafety Council (CNBS) to examine social and economic factors. Following a favorable review by CNBS, and approvals of the individual MON 810 events in specific hybrid varieties, farmers will be able to plant these higher-yielding seeds.
