Brazil has a diverse and sophisticated services industry as well. Mail and telecommunications are the largest, followed by banking, energy, commerce, and computing. During the 1990s, Brazil's financial services industry underwent a major overhaul and is relatively sound. The financial sector provides local firms a wide range of financial products. The largest financial firms are Brazilian (and the two largest banks are government-owned), but U.S. and other foreign firms have an important share of the market.

Fixed-line telephony in Brazil has a relatively low penetration. Since 2002, it has been stagnant or even decreasing, losing customers to mobile telephony. Many higher income households have started to disconnect narrowband lines in favour of a broadband connection. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services are growing ever more popular, accounting for 36% of Brazil’s international calls and causing incumbent operators to lose revenues. The fixed-line market has been privatised and is open to competition. There are four major players (Telesp, Telemar, Brasil Telecom and Embratel) and a large number of smaller operators.

In 1533, the Portuguese colonized Brazil. After a lengthy Moorish occupation, Portugal had adapted a variety of North African cooking traditions, among them coffee, dried fruits and pastries. These culinary customs were in turn exported to Brazil, with the twist of being prepared using local ingredients.
