Boxing Day In South Africa, Boxing Day is known in the official calendar as Day of Goodwill. It is a day on which food, left over from Christmas Day, is 'boxed', (in picnic baskets, bags, cake tins, etc.) and family and friends head to the beach or any other place of relaxation to enjoy these left-overs. Food is shared and enjoyed together in this way. With the advent of the new political dispensation, this day was changed to 'Day of Goodwill' to symbolise sharing and togetherness.
Male shoppers, almost half of whom say they'd stand in line to get into a store on Boxing Day (compared to only 37 percent of women), will be out in force today at local electronic stores. While only 13 percent of women have visions of buying the latest tech tool, 43 percent of men expect to pick up a new electronic toy.

Boxing Day began in mid-nineteenth century England under Queen Victoria. It is celebrated on December 26 (or the following Monday if the 26th falls on a Saturday or Sunday). Also know as Saint Stephen’s Day, Boxing Day gave the upper class a chance to give gifts to the lower classes.
The British Red Cross launched the Asia Earthquake and Flood Appeal on Boxing Day. This triggered an exceptional and unprecedented response from the British public, raising £18 million. The money has helped support the Movement’s emergency relief operations across the affected region. An additional £350 million was raised by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Appeal, of which the British Red Cross will receive £60 million.

[One] popular belief is that since servants were required to work on Christmas day, they took the next day (the Boxing Day) off to celebrate their Christmas. Before they left the homes of their masters to spend their day with friends and families, their employers gave them a small gift as a token of their appreciation. The rich royals would ‘box’ up their left over Christmas food or even gifts and handed them out to the tenants who stayed and worked on their land.
BUSAN, South Korea -- Kriv Stenders' low-budget, digital Australian film "Boxing Day" reminds jaded viewers of the fundamental strengths of the medium. Though slightly unpolished, Stenders has crafted a gripping domestic drama of ample power. "Boxing Day" could see success in markets where the Dardennes' "The Child" and Mike Leigh's "Secrets & Lies" were modest hits.
