As time went by, Boxing Day gift giving expanded to include those who had rendered a service during the previous year. This tradition survives today as people give presents to tradesmen, mail carriers, doormen, porters, and others who have helped them.

Today, Boxing Day is spent with family and friends with lots of food and sharing of friendship and love. Government buildings and small businesses are closed but the malls are open and filled with people exchanging gifts or buying reduced priced Christmas gifts, cards, and decorations.

It was ... traditional that servants got the day off to celebrate Christmas with their families on Boxing Day. Before World War II, it was common for working people (such as milkmen and butchers) to travel round their delivery places and collect their Christmas box or tip. This tradition has now mostly stopped and any Christmas tips, given to people such as postal workers and newspaper delivery children, are not normally given or collected on Boxing Day.

With social changes, the concept came in for more changes and then Boxing Day became a day when people would give small gifts or monetary tips to those who worked for them throughout the year. Even today, it is customary in many households to give Christmas gift packs and boxes to people who serve them on a routine basis – right from the paperboy to the milkmaid, the dustman and even the postal worker. Now... gift-exchanges among family members have become pretty common.
Unlike during previous years, many stores chose to begin the traditional festive season price cutting on Boxing Day. The move paid off as thousands of people packed into shops in the search for bargains.

In North America, December 26 is called Boxing Day and most stores have great deals on merchandise. Its a one day sale and people line up for hours to try to ca$h in on the savings. Besides North America, where else does this event occur?
