Radhames Liz, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, is the Eastern League’s Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 29th. Liz, a native of El Seybo, Dominican Republic, started two games for the Baysox last week and went 1-0 with 16 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA. In his first start of the week the 6’2”, 185 lb. hurler gave up one run on four hits and two walks and struck out six batters in seven innings of work to earn a victory against the Reading Phillies at Prince George’s Stadium last Tuesday night. The 24-year old made his second appearance of the week on Sunday at Binghamton and gave up two runs, one of which was earned, on two hits and three walks while striking out 10 batters in six innings of work in a no-decision. Radhames, who has a league-high 131 strikeouts and was ... the Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 3rd, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a nondrafted free agent on February 15, 2003.

The Bowie Baysox, Class AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, have announced the coaching staff for the 2006 season. Don Werner returns to Bowie for his second season as Baysox manager. Werner compiled a 74-68 record, in his first season as manager of the Baysox in 2005. The Baysox 74 wins during the 2005 season marked the third highest win total for a season in Bowie Baysox history. The 1994 Baysox won a franchise record 84 games in 1994, finishing in second place in the Eastern Leagues Southern Division. The 1997-squad set the second best mark in franchise history with a 75 win season... finishing in second place in the Eastern Leagues Southern Division.

Although the rain delayed the start of the double header Bowie Baysox's game, it didn't dampen dozens of Goddard employees and thousands of spectators from attending this event. Goddard Night with the Bowie Baysox was held last Friday at Prince George's Stadium, home of the Bowie Baysox. Bowie Baysox first baseman Luis Antonio Jimenez has been named the Eastern League’s Player of the Week for the week ending July 29th. The 25-year old had an excellent week for the Baysox, batting .429 (12-for-28) with two doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, five runs scored, one walk and a .750 slugging percentage in seven games. Jimenez, a native of Bobure, Venezuela, had at least one hit in each of the games he played in last week and drove in at least one run in six out of seven games while leading the Baysox to a 7-0 record. In 62 games for the Baysox this season the 6’4”, 205 lb. slugger is hitting .326 with 14 homers and 46 RBI. Luis, who hit .276 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI in 115 games for the Portland Sea Dogs last season, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a minor league free agent on May 14, 2007 and assigned to Bowie after starting the year with the Pawtucket Red Sox of the Triple-A International League.

On July 9, volunteer crews from all three Bowie stations participated in a joint fundraiser between the Maryland Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Bowie Baysox. The purpose of the fundraiser was to support the Maryland Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s ability to support the families of Maryland’s fallen firefighters. The Bowie Baysox, longtime supports of the Bowie VFD, donated a portion of the night’s proceeds to the foundation.
