Boulder Dash

The bottom line on Boulder Dash is that it is a well-crafted, well-executed, thinking man's action game. Strategy is important, but if you don't have the reflexes to back it up, you will be doomed to failure. You must act quickly and think even faster. If this sentence describes you, then Boulder Dash is your perfect game. ~ Michael Schwartz/Joan Dykman, All Game Guide

Now… Pocketnapalm and First Star Software, Inc. (the owners of Boulder Dash) have released Boulder Dash® – Pocket PC Extreme™. And ‘Extreme’ is right! The graphics are improved to the max! The game play is still there, just like the original. For those of you who have never played Boulder Dash (if there are such people out there), it’s rather simple. You must move your character through the dirt and collect gems.

Boulder Dash 3: This game was done by a different team. It has several bugs, in part due to the usage of the outdated BD1 engine. The new space theme isn't very popular among fans. However, the worse thing is the fact, that the levels 4 and 5 are unplayable due to bugs. In some caves, the monoliths (the name of the amoebas in BD3) are not animated due to wrongly set bits in the animation table.

If nothing else, Boulder Dash should be commended for its near-perfect balance of action and strategy. If you don't have an appetite for both... expect to fail in this exceptionally difficult NES game.

In Boulder Dash 2, you guide a character called Rockford around scrolling caves of boulders and diamonds. Your aim is to collect a set quota of diamonds within a time limit and then reach the previously concealed exit. Boulders can be pushed or dropped by digging through the earth that supports them, but it's all too easy to be hit by a falling boulder, miss out on necessary diamonds, or bury the exit under an avalanche.
