Over the past year Boston College and all of the member schools in the JA-SIG group have been inundated with vendor proposals, some promising to provide their rendition of a campus portal at no charge to the institution. The vendors fall into three categories. The first is the commercial portal vendors (e.g., Jenzabar, MyBytes, Campus Pipeline, etc.) who derive their revenue from selling advertising banners or including prominent links to sites, which in turn sell products. The second group is the application vendors (e.g., Blackboard, Peoplesoft) who are attempting to make their products the campus portal and then assume the same functionality and leverage of the pure commercial portal vendors.
