Old BC in Boston's South End The history of Boston College is traced to the founding of the Society of Jesus in 1534 and the early activity of Jesuits in New England in the 17th and 18th centuries. Jesuit founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, imagined a distinct mission that sought to engage intellectual inquiry, faith, and cultural contributions "in conversation with the city." His Society established colleges and universities in almost every part of the known world, and its members were among the great explorers of the Age of Discovery. In 1825, Benedict Joseph Fenwick, SJ, a Jesuit from Maryland, became the second Bishop of Boston. He was the first to articulate a vision for a "College in the City of Boston" that would raise a new generation of leaders to serve both the civic and spiritual needs of his fledgling diocese.

After the University-wide Information Portal is fully operational, the portal will become the primary interface for every member of the Boston College community. This statement may seem like a reach, but the capabilities and the technologies are advancing at a pace that will make this reality sooner than one might think. It is not going to happen all at once. The challenge is to position the university correctly and to continually add capabilities and functions to an adaptable framework. The framework must ... permit existing applications to continue to run unaltered until components are replaced or refined. The course of action, which is recommended in this report, is a step in the right direction technically and organizationally; it represents a set of natural evolutionary steps.
