Boston College entered the 2005-06 season as a participant of the Preseason NIT. Following a 51-44 win over Drexel and a 62-51 victory over Richmond, BC ran into and were stuffed by former Big East rival UConn 60-46 in the semifinal round. The women rebounded with 41-point win over Vermont, topping the Catamounts 79-38. Boston College entered league play with a 12-2 record and ranked no. 19 in the country, including a stunning win against then top-10 ranked Stanford University. In BC's first-ever ACC game, the women lost a heart-breaking overtime game to Maryland 67-64. After a rough 0-4 start to ACC play, the Eagles bounced back to win seven straight games, including wins in six consecutive conference games.

Boston College's three most famous football victories came on the final play of the game. On the day after Thanksgiving, November 23, 1984, before a national audience on CBS, Doug Flutie became a legend when his 48 yard Hail Mary found its way into the arms of Gerard Phelan for a 47-45 victory over Miami in the Orange Bowl. This was ... the year Flutie won the Heisman, making it the only ever for the Eagles. (See also Flutie effect). Nine years later, almost to the day (November 20, 1993), the Eagles went into South Bend and defeated top-ranked Notre Dame 41-39 on a 41 yard field goal by David Gordon as time expired. An additional nine years later BC would accomplish this again taking down second-ranked Notre Dame in South Bend with a 14-7 victory ruining their perfect season.

The victory helped keep the Eagles in contention for a spot in the ACC Championship game. Dunbar ... had a 96-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the Eagles' win over the Terrapins last season, the longest in school history.

Boston College has gone from surprise team of the Atlantic Coast Conference into a freefall. Yet, there are signs that things are about to get better for the Eagles. Boston College lost its sixth straight game when it dropped a 90-80 decision at Duke on Feb. 9. That dropped the Eagles to 12-10 overall and 3-6 in the ACC. Yet, Boston College showed quite a bit of life as it led by eight points at one point before eventually succumbing to a more talented Duke team.
