The Bosnian Pyramid, Visocica Hill, is the first European pyramid to be discovered and is located in the heart of Bosnia, in the town of Visoko. The pyramid has all the elements: four perfectly shaped slopes pointing toward the cardinal points, a flat top and an entrance complex. On top of the pyramid are ... the ruins of a Medieval walled town, once the base of a Bosnian king Tvrtko of Kotromanic (1338-1391). Because of its similarities to the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico, it has been named the “Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun” ('Bosanska Piramida Sunca'). There are also a four more ancient structures on the site, the Bosnian Pyramid of the Moon ('Bosanska Piramida Mjeseca'), Bosnian Pyramid of the Dragon ( 'Bosanska Piramida Zmaja'), Bosnian Pyramid of the Love ('Bosanska Piramida Ljubavi') and Temple of the Earth, ('Hram Zemlje').

From 1941-1945, Bosnia-Hercegovina was part of the NDH, Nezavisna Drzava Hrvatska, the Independent State of Croatia and was one of the bloodiest arenas of the Holocaust and battlefields of the war. With the assistance of Haj Amin el Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, and Reichsfuehrer SS Heinrich Himmler, the Bosnian Muslim leadership undertook the systematic extermination of the Jewish and non-Muslim, non-Croat population of Bosnia-Hercegovina. Two Waffen SS Divisions and other Nazi and fascist formations were formed to advance the goals of the Third Reich and of Islam. The goal of the Muslims was to achieve autonomy and independence for Bosnia-Hercegovina under Muslim rule. The period 1941-1945 is crucial in understanding and comprehending the Bosnian civil war of 1992-1995.

Bosnia has an area of 51,129 sq km (19,741 sq mi). It is a mountainous country. In particular, extensions of the Dinaric Alps, which form Bosnia’s western border with Croatia, traverse the western and southern parts of the republic. The highest peak is Mount Maglič, measuring 2,387 m (7,831 ft), on the border with Montenegro. Miloshevich and Serb nationalist forces in Bosnia have at their disposal the resources of the Yugoslav National Army, including the fourth largest arsenal in Cold-War Europe. They have used these weapons to lethal effect in their assault on Bosnia's cities, towns and villages. Over a million people have been bombed and driven from their homes, hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed and wounded. Serb nationalist forces have overrun 70% of Bosnia's territory, "cleansing" conquered areas by driving out or killing the non-Serb inhabitants.

Bosnia has reinforced the fact that the United States active military force alone is not equipped to support peace keeping operations over a sustained period. The contribution of Army and Air Force National Guard and Reserve Units in medicine, intelligence, law enforcement, public affairs, psychological operations and civil affairs have clearly been instrumental in the overall success of the operation. The 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) out of Fort Bragg, the United States Army only full time active duty Psychological Operations Group, was initially given the mission to support the information campaign. Due to the size of the theater and projected length of the mission, virtually all reserve psychological operations units were called up for active duty to assist in the accomplishment of the mission. In June 1996, part of the 346th PSYOP Company began their deployment to Bosnia along with other elements of the 15th PSYOP BN (POB), 2nd PSYOP Group (POG). In all the 15th POB deployed one Division Psychological Support Element (designated DPSE 20) and three Brigade Psychological Support Elements (BPSE's) each with three enhanced Tactical PSYOP Teams (TPT's) to Task Force Eagle as well as elements to support the British forces in Multi-National Division (MND) Southwest (SW). In addition, 7th Psychological Operations Group personnel manned "Red Ball", a PSYOP element headquartered at the Headquarters, Combined Joint Information Task Force (HQ CJIICTF) in Sarajevo which served as a transportation element delivering products to the various MNDs, and was used to fill in gaps in the theater by doing dissemination as required.

Major wars affecting Bosnia took place almost every two generations throughout the Ottoman period. Bosnia was an important recruiting ground for Süleyman I the Magnificent's campaign to conquer Hungary (1520–33); there was fighting on Bosnia's borders during his final Hungarian campaign of 1566; and the large-scale Habsburg-Ottoman conflict of 1593–1606 was sparked by fighting in the Bihac region of northwestern Bosnia. This war left Bosnia financially drained and militarily exhausted. A Venetian-Ottoman war began in the 1640s and lasted until 1669, involving heavy fighting and destruction in parts of western Bosnia. In the Habsburg-Ottoman war of 1683–99, Austria reconquered Ottoman Hungary and Slavonia, sending a flood of Muslim refugees (mainly converted Slavs) into Bosnia. In 1697 a small Austrian army under Prince Eugene of Savoy marched into the heart of Bosnia, put Sarajevo to the torch, and hurried back to Austrian territory, taking thousands of Catholic Bosnians.
