built 632 days ago
As one of the leading shelter reconstruction and infrastructure rehabilitation agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, UMCOR BiH has received more than US$ 92 million in funding since 1993. Through the generous support of its donors, UMCOR BiH has facilitated the return of over 28,000 families through the reconstruction of houses, schools and dozens of health facilities, bridges and municipal buildings. UMCOR BiH's infrastructure rehabilitation activities have included the repair of over 100 kilometers of power lines and street lighting and water and sanitation systems, as well as support for town maintenance activities such as rubbish collection. All of these activities have enhanced the safety and efficiency of local communities, as well as provided permanent housing solutions for over 66,000 people, thereby encouraging a greater number of refugees and displaced persons to return to their homes.

Map of Bosnia [T]he continued presence at large of ICTY indictees - most notably the Bosnian Serb wartime leaders Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic - represents a fundamental obstacle to lasting stability, reconciliation and prosperity in BiH and the wider region. The UK Government continues to make it clear that the continued freedom of indictees is incompatible with BiH's aspirations of further integration with Euro-Atlantic structures.

Crisis Group has provided detailed analysis and constructive criticism of the peace implementation process in Bosnia and Herzegovina since early 1996. This long engagement has permitted Crisis Group to speak with influence regarding both the achievements and the failures of the international community's "state-building" efforts in BiH - and to become a vital source of information and policy advice for foreign and domestic authorities, academics and journalists.
