Borussia Dortmund was the first German club to win a European trophy, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in 1966 in the Cup Winners' Cup. Long a rival in Westphalia to Schalke 04, the Borussen have been German champions only six times. Three of those titles, and a European Champions Cup, have come in the past ten years. But financial turmoil followed, leading to the departures of the two men behind that success, Chairman Gerd Niebaum, and General Manager Michael Meier.

Borussia Dortmund had no match this week as the remainder of the league teams were involved in the German Cup. But the break hasnt allowed any of Bert van Marwijks players to return from injury. Quite the opposite, in fact, as Germany international Christoph Metzelder now has a dead leg from training and is a doubt for the game at the Westfalen Stadium with Markus Brzenska waiting in the wings. Van Marwijk knows its not going to be easy against one of the top sides in the Bundesliga.

Considering that Borussia Dortmund had the eighth-fewest goals allowed in 2006-07, the team should have a good chance at the UEFA Cup or the Champion’s League next season. After all, they fell only four points shy of claiming the final Bundesliga spot in the UEFA Cup last year. It is not far-fetched to imagine that they could win one or two more games, at the very least, next year.
Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA reported earnings results for the first quarter ended September 30, 2007. For the quarter, the company reported earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) in negative of €0.8 million. Earnings before taxes amounted in negative of €1.9 million. Group earnings per share reported in negative of €0.06. The company announced that despite the scheduled negative financial result in the first quarter, the management expects a positive total financial result in the fiscal year of 2008.
At the turn of the millennium, Borussia Dortmund became the first – and so far the only – publicly traded club on the German stock market. Two years later they won their third Bundesliga title and lost the final of the 2002 UEFA Cup to Dutch side Feyenoord. Poor financial management led to a heavy debt load and the sale of their Westfalenstadion ground. The situation was compounded by failure to advance in the 2003 Champions League when the team was eliminated on penalties in the qualifying rounds by Club Brugge. Borussia was again driven to the brink of bankruptcy in 2005, the original €11 value of its shares having plummeted by over 80% on the Frankfurter Wertpapierbörse (Frankfurt Stock Exchange). The response to the crisis included a 20% pay cut to all players.
