Boron is the first element in Group 13 (IIIA) of the periodic table. The periodic table is a chart that shows how the chemical elements are related to each other. The elements in this group are usually referred to as the aluminum family.

Boron home Boron is a naturally occurring element. In the environment, boron is combined with oxygen and other elements in compounds called borates. Borates are widely found in nature, and are present in oceans, sedimentary rocks, coal, shale and some soils. Boron compounds have been known for thousands of years, but boron element was not discovered until the early 1800s. Boron element is not found free in nature, but occurs as orthoboric acid usually found in certain volcanic spring waters and as borates in boron and colemantie. Important sources of boron are ore rasorite (kernite) and tincal (borax ore). Both of these ores are found in the Mojave Desert. Tincal is the most important source of boron from the Mojave.
