Insightful and unapologetic, Born on the Fourth of July sears into your soul just as Stone’s previous films Platoon and Salvador did a few years earlier. Like Platoon, it accurately portrays the horror and confusion of war. It shows veterans hospitals in a way you’ll never see in any public service announcement for the VA. And, in Kovic’s scene with fellow former soldier Timmy Burns (Frank Whaley), it drives home the point that the only ones you can ever talk to about life during wartime are those who were ... on the front lines.

Oliver Stone has made several prominent movies, including Platoon, Salvador, Born on the Fourth of July, and JFK. He was born in New York City. Stone's mother was Catholic, his father Jewish, a stockbroker who published investment newsletters. The Stones were a very Republican family, and quite well off; he was raised largely by nannies, and attended prestigious private schools. His parents divorced when he was in high school, and only then did Stone learn of his father's many extramarital affairs with the wives of several family friends, as well as that, his father told him, the family fortune was depleted. Stone attended Yale for one year before dropping out.

Along the lines of the other great Vietnam films like Platoon & Comming Home, Born on the Fourth of July is the best anti-war movie since All Quiet on the Western Front. how could the government of the USA, who claims it belives in life and liberty and persues freedom of speech, treat protestors like that? How could they send innocent boys to die in some country 10,000 miles away?
