Boogie Nights: 70S

The first hour of Boogie Nights looks like a college film student made movie -- a soundtrack in search of a coherent story. There is an overmixed soundtrack of radio and disco hits from the late 70s, all commenting on what bits of story are established (in the manner that radio people of the day used current music to comment upon news stories). It is an extremely sneaky start to an extremely well made flick.

Boogie Nights sloppily recreates the '70s, showing, for instance, widespread use of platform shows when they had been out of fashion for years. Eight track stereo and the Shaft look in mens wear were similarly out of date. "From the very first shot this crappy movie demonstrated how lazy the filmmaker was going to be when it came to veracity." (R. Geoff Baker)

Boogie Nights is a dance party dedicated to bringing back the music, styles and pop culture of the 70s and 80s. Guests will be treated to all of their favorite disco, pop and dance hits, from Abba to ZZ Top, spun by a live DJ. A video wall displaying music videos and visual imagery from each era will set the mood, and invite customers to hit the dance floor underneath the shimmering disco ball.

If porn gets lost in First Amendment issues in THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, it gets lost in BOOGIE NIGHTS by becoming a metaphor for the 70s and 80s. Again, several headlines of reviews and commentaries as well as the kickers accompanying them reveal this metaphoric connotation.
