Throughout her career, Bonnie Raitt remained a committed activist, playing hundreds of benefit concerts and working tirelessly on behalf of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. By the early '80s... In 1983, as Raitt was finishing work on her follow-up album, titled Tongue & Groove, Warner Bros. cleaned house, dropping a number of major artists from their roster. The album was shelved indefinitely, and Raitt was left without a label. By now, Raitt was ... struggling with alcohol and drug abuse.

BONNIE RAITT JUGGLED happily between the various lines on the desk telephone in an office at Warner Brothers' New York headquarters. She seemed to be relaying premature Christmas greetings to people who lived some distance away, and the Warner Brothers telephone enabled her to make all these expensive calls at no personal cost.
