Bonnie Raitt: Sippie Wallace
built 627 days ago
When Bonnie Raitt headed off to Radcliffe College in 1967, she thought she could save the world. Two years later, she dropped out — with a better idea. She'd played guitar since she was a kid, and loved the blues. In Cambridge, she met a blues promoter who introduced her to many of the greats, including Son House, Fred McDowell and Sippie Wallace.

An effusive Raitt told the sold-out crowd at the Michigan Theater all about her past in the town, right down to meeting support act Stephen Bruton at a 1971 gig opening for Kris Kristofferson at nearby Hill Auditorium. She ... shouted out to friends and heroes in the crowd, including mandolinist David Grisman, gospel singer Marianne Williams and Ron Harwood, who managed the late roots great Sippie Wallace. Raitt performed the latter's "Mighty Tight Woman" during the show, with Bruton guesting.

Born on November 8, 1949, in Burbank, CA, she was the daughter of Broadway star John Raitt, best known for his starring performances in such smashes as Carousel and Pajama Game. After picking up the guitar at the age of 12, Bonnie felt an immediate affinity for the blues, and although Raitt went off to attend Radcliffe in 1967, within 2 years Bonnie had dropped out to begin playing the Boston folk & blues club circuit. Signing with noted blues manager Dick Waterman, Bonnie was soon performing alongside idols that included Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and Sippie Wallace and in time earned such a strong reputation that she was signed to Warner Bros Records.
