The daughter of Broadway star John Raitt and accomplished pianist Marjorie, Bonnie Raitt grew up in Los Angeles in a family of artists and social activists. At age 8, a Christmas gift of a Stella guitar was emblematic. Bonnie's ultimate six-string prowess and singing would ultimately land her a major-label deal by 1971.

[I]n recent years, Raitt has spent a lot of time at bedsides. In 2001, her older brother became ill with brain cancer, which is now in remission. Then her mother, Marge Goddard, died at 84 from complications from Alzheimer's, followed seven months later by the death of her father, the great Broadway star John Raitt, at age 88 earlier this year.

World Entertainment News Network--GOLDEN GLOBE winning movie maker MARTIN SCORSESE is to team up with AEROSMITH and BONNIE RAITT for his next project. The director is to mark The Year of The Blues by filming a star-studded line-up at THE BLUES in New York on 7 February (03). The line-up includes Aerosmith, Raitt, BB KING, ROBERT CRAY and DR JOHN among others.

In 1994 at the urging of Dick Waterman Raitt funded the replacement of a headstone for one of her mentors, Mississippi Fred Mc Dowell through the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund. Raitt would later finance memorial headstones in Mississippi for Memphis Minnie, Sam Chatmon, and Tommy Johnson through the Mt. Zion Fund.
