As Bombay was a deep water port, large vessels were able to dock there. Bombay needed a fort and a garrison of soldiers to protect it from Dutch fleets and Indian pirates.

The Bombay is a shorthair breed of domestic cat, closely related to the Burmese. The Bombay is noted for its shiny black coat and copper eyes and for its affectionate and playful temperament.

Bombay, originally was made up of seven islands of lush, fertile land. The earliest inhabitants were the Kolis or fisherfolk, which named the islands, as Mumbai, after a patron deity. The Sultan of Gujarat acquired much of these lands by the 14th Century but it fell to the portugese in 1534. The Portugese later gave MumbaDevi (Bombay) to England as part of a dowry upon the marriage of Catherine of Braganza to Charles II. By the mid 17th Century, England held control over all seven islands. Not until the 18th Century, following land reclamation were the seven islands joined together.

With the Bombay's sleek, glossy coat and bright eyes, this breed resembles a miniature black panther. It was developed from the Burmese and exhibits the muscular body type and affectionate, mellow temperament of the Burmese.

The Bombay's head is rounded with a short muzzle. The coat is the most defining characteristic of the Bombay. It’s short, flat, gleaming, black-to-the-roots coat accentuates its rippling muscular form. And don’t forget expressive huge copper eyes.

One association, TICA, allows these kittens to be registered and shown as sable Burmese, but the Bombay body type is sufficiently different from Burmese that they generally are not show quality. However, a person looking for a pet Burmese might do well to contact Bombay breeders, since only a trained eye would notice the differences between a "sable Bombay" and a pure Burmese.
