Formed in 1874, Bolton Wanderers were Football League founder members in 1888 and winners of the first FA Cup final at Wembley in 1923. Further FA Cup glory followed in 1926 and 1929 and Wanderers were ... riding high in the First Division with third-placed finishes recorded in 1921 and 1925.

Despite Bolton Wanderers victory, they will have their work cut out. Atletico Madrid have won four of their five matches played against English clubs at home and have won all of their last seven matches in Europe played at home. During this run they have found the net on 16 occasions, averaging just over two goals scored a game.

At the end of the 1986–87 season, Bolton Wanderers suffered relegation to the Fourth Division for the first time in their history. But the board kept faith in manager Phil Neal and they won promotion back to the Third Division at the first attempt. The deciding goal was scored by Robbie Savage in a 1–0 win at Wrexham. Neal remained in charge until the summer of 1992 when he made way for Bruce Rioch, who a few years earlier had won two successive promotions with Middlesbrough.

Bolton Wanderers are perhaps fortunate to reach the last 32 of the UEFA Cup after just winning one match in the group stage. While a credible 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich is not to be sniffed at, two other draws and a narrow win against Crvena Zvezda means they have not convinced at this level. They take on an Atletico Madrid side bursting with talent, including 14-goal Diego Forland and former Arsenal midfielder Jose Antonio Reyes.

Bolton Wanderers were founded as Christ Church by the vicar of Christ Church Sunday School in the city of Bolton. After several years club members could no longer meet at the school and had to 'wander' to a nearby tavern for meetings. The club's name was changed in 1877 to reflect this. Won the first FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, the famous 'White Horse Final'. It was given this nickname because it took a police officer atop a white horse to clear the massive crowd from the field. Bolton Wanderers have the unfortunate distinction of playing the most seasons in the English First Division/Premier League without ever winning the title.
