Today's event commemorated not the Bolshevik Revolution itself, but a World War II parade marking the Bolshevik Revolution. The procession was called by Josef Stalin in 1941 as an act of defiance against Nazi German troops, who had advanced to just a few kilometers from the Kremlin.

The Roman Catholic Church struggled to survive the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution from 1917 to 1924 - seven years of persecution and martyrdom of the clergy and laity that destroyed the main hierarchy of the Church. The tyranny of the government inhibited any further growth of the church and effectively eliminated the Roman Catholic Church as a religious force in Russia.

On July 19, the Kerensky government ordered the arrest of the Bolshevik leadership. Lenin escaped capture, went into hiding, and wrote State and Revolution which outlined his ideas for a socialist government.
