Bolivia: United States
built 646 days ago
Although President Morales has been publicly critical of U.S. policies, the United States and Bolivia have a tradition of cordial and cooperative relations. Development assistance from the United States to Bolivia dates from the 1940s, and the U.S. remains a major partner for economic development, improved health, democracy, and the environment. In 1991, the U.S. Government forgave all of the $341 million debt owed by Bolivia to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as well as 80% ($31 million) of the amount owed to the Department of Agriculture for food assistance. The United States has ... been a strong supporter of forgiveness of Bolivia's multilateral debt under the HIPC initiatives.

In 1985, the Government of Bolivia implemented a far-reaching program of macroeconomic stabilization and structural reform aimed at maintaining price stability, creating conditions for sustained growth, and alleviating poverty. The most important change involved the "capitalization" (privatization) of numerous public sector enterprises. Parallel legislative reforms locked in place market-oriented policies that encouraged private investment. Foreign investors are accorded national treatment, and foreign ownership of companies is virtually unrestricted in Bolivia. Many of these reforms are currently under review. Nationalizations have taken place in both the hydrocarbon and mining sectors, and the role of the state in the economy continues to be a primary goal of the Morales administration.

Bolivians Now Hear Ominous Tones in the Calls to Arms Bolivia's mineral wealth furnishes the bulk of its exports, although natural gas, soybeans, and jewelry are ... important. Chemicals, petroleum, and consumer goods are imported. The tin industry, which is a major component of the economy, has received increasing competition from SE Asia, and as a result several tin mines have closed. The United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Brazil are the chief trading partners. Bolivia became an associate member of Mercosur in 1996.
The current flag of Bolivia was originally adopted by Bolivia in 1851. The state (and war) flag consists of red, yellow and green stripes with the Bolivian coat of arms in the center. The civil flag (and ensign) of Bolivia omits the coat of arms.
Activists from India, the United Kingdom, Israel, Bolivia, Germany and Panama are already in the U.S. to begin the caravan. Among them is Mr. Sanjay Mangala who is representing a movement, which is heading the resistance against dam-projects in the Narmada Valley in India. Activists in London scaled the world's biggest Ferris wheel three days ago, attracting global attention and highlighting the money interests of transnational corporations, the World Bank and Western governments in dam building projects such as those in the Narmada Valley.
