Boise will host the 2009 Winter Special Olympics. It will be split around Ada and Boise counties. The events will be hosted at Idaho IceWorld, Tamarack Resort, Bogus Basin Mountain Resort, and the Qwest Arena. This coming February, there will be a test or mock Olympics to see whether Boise can accommodate having it held here. The event will cost an estimated $28 million. Approximately $8-9 million has already been pledged and another $8 million is expected from the government.

Boise's climate is characterized as semi-arid with four distinct seasons. Boise experiences hot and dry summers where temperatures can often reach triple digits, as well as cold winters with fair amounts of snowfall. Rainfall is usually infrequent and light, averaging less than 2 inches (51 mm) per month. March is the wettest month with an average of 1.41 inches (36 mm). August is the driest month with 0.30 inches (7.6 mm) of rain. Spring and fall are generally temperate.
