Bohemia: Great Moravia
built 617 days ago
Bohemia is a plateau surrounded by lofty mountain ranges, namely, the Bohemian Forest, the Erzgebirge, the Bohemian-Moravian Heights, and the Riesengebirge. The main rivers are the Elbe, known locally as the Labe, and its tributaries, the Vltava and the Ohře.
The impossibility of conquering Bohemia had now become obvious, and it was resolved that a council should meet at Basel to examine the demands of the Hussites. The Germans... influenced by Sigismund, determined to make a last attempt to subdue Bohemia by armed force. The Bohemians, as usual united in the moment of peril, defeated the Germans at Domazlice (Taus) on the 1st of August 1431, after a very short fight. In the course of the same year negotiations began at Basel, the Hussites being represented by a numerous embassy under the leadership of Prokop the Great. The negotiations proceeded very slowly, and in 1433 the Bohemians returned to their own country, accompanied, however, by envoys of the council. Dissensions had meanwhile again broken out in Bohemia, and they were now of a political rather than a religious nature.
One of the more powerful Slavic leaders in Bohemia, Zwentibold (... known as Swatopluk), became the godfather to the son of emperor Arnulf of Carinthia, the Carolingian ruler in the East. Arnulf's son was named after Zwentibold. Arnulf of Carinthia renewed the tributary agreement that allowed Zwentibold's Slavs free reign over the territories up to the Oder river. After the carolingian kingdom fell into decline, Bohemia was for a time a part of the short-lived kingdom of Greater Moravia, then the base of the Slavic Przemyslid Dukes, who ruled in Bohemia and partially in Poland until 1306, when their line became extinct.
Favoured with a suitable climate and inhabited by a thriving rural population, Bohemia is very highly developed in the matter of agriculture. Over S o % of the whole area is under cultivation and the soil is in many parts very fertile, the best-known regions being the " Golden Road " round K6niggratz, the " Paradise " round Teplitz, and the " Garden of Bohemia " round Leitmeritz. The principal products are oats, rye, barley and wheat, but since the competition of Hungarian wheat large tracts of land have been converted to the cultivation of beetroot. The potato crop, which forms the staple food of the people, is great; the Saaz district is celebrated for hops, and the flax is ... of a good quality. Fruit, especially plums, is very abundant and constitutes a great article of export. The forests cover 29.01% of the total area; meadows, 10.05, pastures 5.05, and gardens 1.35%.
The original piano factory in Jihlava continues to handcraft the entire Bohemia vertical piano line -- only 700 pianos annually. In 2000, Bohemia built a brand new grand piano factory from the ground up in the city of Hradec Kralove. It is responsible for Bohemia's annual grand piano production of 180 pianos. That's right...only 180. By comparison, Kawai builds that in a shift. Either Bohemia pianos are extremely handmade or the company is preparing themselves to be featured on an upcoming A&E episode of "Great Automation Blunders."
In March 1619, Matthias died and Ferdinand became Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. Ferdinand made it his crusade to re-Catholicise the empire. Other eastern states in the Holy Roman Empire feared this approach and Lusatia, Moravia and Silesia agreed to support Bohemia. They believed that if they stood alone, they would be easily picked off by Ferdinand. But as a union of four, they stood a better chance. Even the Habsburg’s Upper Austria was opposed to what Ferdinand was doing.
