Boeing and Rockwell are two of the largest defense and space contractors in the U.S. In July 1996, Boeing proposed to buy Rockwell's Aerospace and Defense business. Boeing and Rockwell are members of the only two teams currently competing to develop high-altitude endurance unmanned air vehicles for the Department of Defense's Advance Research Projects Agency. Boeing, together with Lockheed Martin, is developing Tier III Minus, a stealthy, high-altitude endurance unmanned air vehicle, while Rockwell is supplying wings to a team headed up by Teledyne Ryan, which is developing Tier II Plus, a non-stealthy, high-altitude endurance unmanned air vehicle. According to the FTC complaint detailing the charges, the proposed acquisition would position Boeing as a member of both high-altitude endurance unmanned air vehicle teams and would likely lead to anticompetitive effects by allowing Boeing to increase the price of the components it is supplying or reduce its investment in technology and/or quality.

Boeing has been one of the proudest and most obvious examples of American technological success. But in the last ten years, it seems to have lost its direction, while its competitor, Airbus, has been steadily advancing, to the point where it now dominates the market.
On June 3, 1998, saying that The Boeing Co. has a pattern of mishandling hazardous waste at its Auburn facility, the Washington Department of Ecology fined Boeing $148,500 and ordered it to correct its toxic waste problems immediately. On March 7, 2000, a federal judge held Boeing Co. and Cascade Corp. liable for contaminating the city of Portland, Oregon’s backup drinking water wells. The city is asking for $6.6 million in damages, but the claim is still pending.

photo It's no secret that Boeing has a significant number of its product development people studying a replacement for the 737. And Southwest is one of the airlines pushing Boeing to develop such a plane. Southwest is the world's largest 737 operator. It is the only model the airline flys.
After two years of study at Yale's Sheffield School of Science, Boeing returned to Michigan to work for his father. He was sent first to Wisconsin and later to the state of Washington to acquire more timber properties for the family business. In Seattle he met a navy engineer named Conrad Westerveldt who shared his fascination with aviation. A barnstormer named Terah Maroney gave the two men a ride over Puget Sound in his seaplane. Later Boeing went to Los Angeles to purchase his own seaplane, thinking it would be useful for fishing trips. The man who sold him the plane and taught him how to fly was Glenn Martin, who later founded Martin Marietta.

Model of Boeing's first plane, the B&W, at Future of Flight Museum shop In 2004, Boeing ended production of the 757 after 1055 were produced. More advanced, stretched versions of the 737 were beginning to compete against the 757, and the new 787-3 will fill some of the top end of the 757 market. Also that year, Boeing announced that the 717, the last civil aircraft to be designed by McDonnell Douglas, would cease production in 2006. The 767 was in danger of cancellation as well, with the 787 replacing it, but recent orders for the freighter version have extended the program. If Boeing wins the contract for new USAF tankers, the 767 program will continue for years to come.
