Twelve years before he would make history at Columbus (Ohio) Country Club, Bobby Nichols was a 16-year-old in a car loaded with four other teenagers on a joy ride. Their car went out of control at 100 miles per hour. Nichols was flung through the windshield and lay unconscious for 13 days with a broken pelvis, twisted back, collapsed lung and injured kidney. But he recovered; his spirits boosted by a letter from a player who had suffered a similar accident - Ben Hogan.

When one listens to the many broadcasts of the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band, the name Bobby Nichols consistently comes up as one of the orchestra's most exciting soloists. Only age 19-20 at the time, Nichols showed a lot of fire and a great deal of potential but unfortunately he never made it big. He began playing trumpet when he was nine and later attended the New England Conservatory. His biggest job before joining the military was as a trumpeter with Vaughn Monroe's Orchestra (1940-43) -- far from a high-profile position but an impressive spot for a 15-year old. Nichols joined the Army in 1943 and was part of the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band during its two years of existence; his advanced swing solos gave the huge group much of its jazz credibility.

Jack's most memorable experience to date is his win with Bruce Feisher in 1991, the players he likes to work with today are Kurt Cox and Bobby Nichols. What Jack likes the most is working with a player on the Range and on the Green. A player has to practice to make it in this game if you don't practice you probably won't make it. The competition is tough on all tours.
