Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius (DVD) Description: Designer of the Augusta National Golf Club where the Masters Tournament is played, Bobby Jones is a golf legend, portrayed in this biopic by Jim Caviezel (THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST). The film shows the tremendous achievements for which Jones will be forever remembered, while ... realistically conveying the challenges he faced, and the great golfers who mentored him along the way. Sweeping photography adds breathtaking appeal to the chronological story of Jones' life. Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was born in 1902, he suffered from a stomach illness that made him unable to join other boys in playing baseball. Instead, he followed his father's games of golf and practiced by himself. By age 14, he was competing in national competitions, and was recognized as a fine golfer with perfect form and a remarkable stroke.

Born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1902 in Atlanta, Georgia, Bobby Jones, was the only son of Colonel Robert P. Jones, a prominent Atlanta lawyer. The boy, who later became the most infamous man in Golf history, was such a sickly child that he was unable to eat solid food until he was five years old. Bobby’s love for golf and unusual natural ability began at a very early age when he and his family moved to their summer home near East Lake Country Club, eventually leading to his trademark swing despite having never had formal lessons. Upon entering the competitive world of golf, Jones won his very first tournament at the age of 6, and continued to prosper from then on.
The "Golden Age of American Sports" was dominated by Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones Jr. From 1923 to 1930, Jones won thirteen national titles: five U.S. Amateurs, four U.S. Opens, three British Opens, and one British Amateur. In 1930, he became the first and only golfer to win the Grand Slam: the British Amateur, the British Open, the U.S. Open, and the U.S. Amateur. At the height of his career, at age twenty-eight, he retired from competitive golf to devote more time to his family and law practice. Bobby Jones’s incredible skill and talent, coupled with his dignity and grace both on and off the course, make him an extraordinary figure in sport history.
The equipment and terminology of golf have changed a great deal since 1930, the year when amateur phenom Bobby Jones won all four major tournaments in one year. Today's golfers might not even recognize the names of some of the clubs Jones used, like "Niblick" and "Spoon." Jones' clubs were made of Hickory wood. The most popular clubs on the market today are made from materials like titanium, graphite and steel. The size and shape of golf clubs have changed dramatically, as well. In the last decade alone, the average size of a driver head has doubled from approximately 200 cc's to more than 400 cc's.
Though he played the game almost three quarters of a century ago, Bobby Jones will be forever woven into the very fabric of golf. The mere mention of his name immediately conjures up scenes that take their place among the most memorable in the history of the game: the rhythmic, perfectly balanced swing; the boyish face; the articulate, southern drawl; Augusta National; The Masters; the Grand Slam. Individually, his legacies left on the game are some of the most significant of all time. Together, they tell the wonderful story of one of the greatest the game of golf has ever seen.
