Jones' four titles in the U.S. Open remain tied for the most ever in that championship, along with Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus. His four second-place finishes in the U.S. Open ... tie that record, along with Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, and Phil Mickelson. His five titles in the U.S. Amateur are a record. Jones was ranked as the fourth greatest golfer of all time by Golf Digest magazine in 2000. Jack Nicklaus was first, Ben Hogan second, and Sam Snead third.[2]
Not being a golfer or a fan of biographies of sportsmen, this viewer found a surprising amount of satisfaction in this recreation of the life of Bobby Jones, whose fame in the game of golf is legendary. So the question arises: "How can a film about golf maintain such a viewer's attention and appreciation?" The answer lies in the physical production of this beautiful little film. Capturing the essence of the world in the 1920s and 1930s not only in costuming and manners and atmosphere but in sociologic and philosophic vantages, Director Rowdy Herrington has ably explored the life and times of the reluctant hero in a way that exhumes a period in history when everyone needed something to believe in. Actors Jim Caviezel, Malcolm McDowell, Jeremy Northam, and Claire Forlani not only look their parts: their demeanor before the camera absorbs the state of mind of America lapsing from the riotous 20s to the massive depression of the 30s.

Golf great Robert Tyre Jones (1902-1971) won his first match, a neighborhood tournament for kids, when he was only six years old. He went on from there to become America's greatest golfer.

Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius Jim Caviezel stars as Bobby Jones in this biopic of the young golfer who dominated the sport throughout the 1920s, winning nine major championships before retiring from competition at age 28 to spend time with his family. He later founded the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters tournament.

Jones wins the U.S. Amateur at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, defeating fellow East Lake golfer Watts Gunn 8 and 7 on the twenty-ninth hole. This is the only time two members of the same club have met in the finals of a major championship.
There's no need to rattle off the film's depictions of Jones' other victories, but suffice it to say that it wonderfully captures that 1930 Slam—winning the British Amateur, British Open, U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open all in the same year. To this day, no other golfer has ever won the Grand Slam in the same calendar year. (Tiger Woods won all four of today's majors consecutively in 2000-2001 in sort of a "backdoor" Slam.)
