Bobby Jones: Game

During his career, Jones played in one ABA All-Star Game and four NBA All-Star Games. He led the ABA in field goal percentage twice, and led the NBA in field goal percentage during the 1977-78 season. In 1983, Jones was selected as the very first NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
Jones is diagnosed with syringomyelia, a degenerative spinal disease. That same year, the United States Golf Association establishes the annual Bob Jones Award, honoring a person who, by a single act or over the years, emulates Jones's sportsmanship, respect for the game, its rules, generosity of spirit, sense of fair play, self-control, and perhaps even sacrifice. The award's first recipient is Francis Ouimet.
Ironically, from a financial perspective, golf does remain literally a "worthless ballgame" for Jones, who never turned pro, choosing to remain an amateur his entire career—mostly to focus on going to college. That's perhaps the most remarkable thing about Jones' accomplishments; he played the game part-time!
As depicted here, Jones was an aloof and withdrawn figure, and Caviezel plays him with a level of intensity and suffering that makes his recent Jesus look like a party animal. The relentlessly downbeat nature of the character eventually becomes a bit wearying, not to mention such pained admissions as "The longer I play this game, the harder it gets." Would-be attempts at humanizing him like his meet-cute encounter with Mary (Claire Forlani), the beautiful young woman who would eventually become his wife, feel all too forced.
