Bob Seagren: Mexico City
built 628 days ago
In 1968, Bob Seagren participated in his first Olympic Games in Mexico City. In an exciting contest, he won the gold medal with the top three vaulters, including silver medallist Claus Schiprowski (West Germany) and the bronze medal winner Wolfgang Nordwig (East Germany) reaching the same height (5.40 m).
Bob rode the fiberglass revolution in vaulting poles to ever higher heights, raising the American record during his reign as America's best vaulter six times by a total of over a foot. Early in the 1968 Olympic season, he won the Mt. SAC title with a meet record leap of 17-1. He was one of three jumpers to clear 17-8 1/2 at Mexico City, winning the Olympic gold medal on fewest misses.

One of the athletes he worked with that stands out for Tucker was a young pole vaulter named Bob Seagren, who never competed for the Vaqueros but was a student at Glendale before he transferred to USC. During the 1966 indoor and outdoor track seasons, Seagren set world records at both levels and ultimately won the gold medal in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
