Much of Marley's early work was produced by Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. That relationship later deteriorated due to financial pressure, and in the early 1970s he produced what is believed by many to be his finest work with Lee Perry. This pair ... split apart, this time over the assignment of recording rights. They did work together again in London, though, and remained friends until Marley's death.

Marley and his mother moved to Kingston's Trenchtown slum after Norval's death. He was forced to learn self-defense, as he became the target of bullying because of his racial makeup and small stature (5'4" or 163 cm tall)

Following this, Marley became active in the anti-Mononucleosis movement. His new hit, Trench-mouth Rock, was written during this period. It was here that he began his obsession with chickenfucking that would haunt him until his death.
