The Alaska Office of Boating Safety has announced the completion of a new instructional video on cold water boating safety. In a state where capsizing and falls overboard into cold water account for the majority of boating deaths the video, entitled Cold Water Boating, is intended to educate boaters on how to prepare for, avoid, and survive a cold water immersion event.
The Office of Boating Safety says that enhanced user awareness and training is just one step towards propeller injury avoidance. They maintain that technologies, such as guards, propulsion, interlocks and sensors, will make all the difference in the world when it comes to preventing injury and death.
"This program is designed to encourage innovative programs that address the boating safety concerns of communities nationwide," said Ruth Wood, director of the BOAT/U.S. Foundation. The grants will be awarded in January 2000. Funding for the program comes from the 500,000 members of BOAT/US, the world's largest organization of recreational boaters.

Flare guns, or visual distress signals are another thing that most states will require as a part of the boating safety equipment. In case of an emergency these can send a bright signal in the skies, alerting the rescue forces to your position. The flare gun must again be readily accessible for a speedy use, but on the other hand they must be stored safely and out of reach of children, as they can cause a lot of damage when wrongly used.
In many ways, boating safety is common sense. While boaters can make careless mistakes, most should be smart enough to know that flames and cigarettes need to be extinguished before fueling a boat. With all of the safety awareness that is presented to boaters, hopefully everyone is aware that life jackets are required safety equipment on every boat. By the way, nearly 80% of boating related fatalities every year result from drowning.
