From 1966, BMW transfered the production of motorcycles step by step to Berlin which was finished in 1969. From that day, every BMW motorcycle was built at the Berlin factory-except the transmission, which is built by GETRAG at Ludwigsburg. The only exception is the F650 which was built in Noale, Italy by Aprilia until 2002. The frame production was outsourced to the BMW building at Berlin-Reinickendorf.

The MIB used by BMW is a partially integrated ABS system. The rider controls the rear wheel brake using the brake pedal alone. The pressure for the front wheel brake is generated using the hand lever, while the ABS electric pump specially adapted for this partially integrated system actively increases the pressure on the rear wheel brake. The integrated rear wheel lift-off protection (RLP) represents a further safety benefit. It briefly stops the pressure build-up or gently reduces the pressure in the front braking circuit whenever the wheel speed sensors indicate that rear wheel lift-off is imminent. This maintains the minimum load on the rear wheel necessary for lateral guidance and prevents an imminent rollover within the bounds of physical possibility.

During WWII BMW produced the BMW R75 motorcycle with a sidecar attached. This motorcycle was essentially an 80% interchangeable copy of the ZUndapp KS750, made by BMW to avoid producing the KS750 under licence. Unusually, the sidecar's wheel was ... driven. Combined with a lockable differential, this made the vehicle very capable off-road, an equivalent in many ways to the Jeep.

The term "bimmer" was later coined to refer (exclusively) to BMW automobiles. As such, use of the word "beemer" to refer to a BMW automobile is frowned upon by BMW enthusiasts, because it is the term used for motorcycles, though the distinction is somewhat arbitrary. Interestingly, in the German language, the correct pronunciation of the term "bimmer" is "beemer."
