The Blue Hawks have excellent chances to score substantial points on Saturday. DSU has two athletes each in the triple jump (Goodman and Mike Thompson) and 400m (Ramon Miller and Jameson Strachan), and single athletes in the 60m (Jamal Forbes), 1000m (Sergio Jimenez) and 5000m (Porfirio Parra) races and ... one competitor in the pole vault (Travis Norberg). The 4 x 400m relay will conclude as well, with the Hawks holding on to the fastest qualifying mark. Competing for the women's team will be Christa Hofland in the shot put, Valdenea Baine in the triple jump and Rose Kipkirui in the 5000m run.

Blue Hawk repeated Blanchard's words to his cousin in Comanche. When he was finished, Dark Bear responded, his first words calm, then his voice rising as he glared at Blanchard and gestured angrily. Dark Bear's eyes glittered as he fixed his gaze on the dying Ranger.

Blanchard and Blue Hawk spent that night in a shallow draw about two miles from the arroyo where the Horton gang had met their fate. They had driven the outlaws' horses before them and picketed them on a good-sized patch of grass. Now, early the next morning, they were eating breakfast before preparing to move on.

Other Blue Hawks turned in stellar improvements. Eli Turnbough--his 2:02.19 in the 800m was a five-second improvement in eight days. Christa Hofland's best shot put toss (43' 3.75") landed nearly four feet further than her best put last week and ... put both of her feet inside the door for the national meet. Sergio Jimenez (4:25.48) could only earn 2nd in the mile, but he was a deeply competitive 0.51 seconds ahead of the next three runners. His time was 8.16 seconds better than his mark at Chardon State.

Once Blue Hawk handed him therazor and bar of yellow soap, Blanchard headed outside. T, his paint gelding, nickered a greeting as he saw his rider standing in the doorway of the cave.
