Filmed in Hawaii in 1961, Blue Hawaii was Elvis's most successful film, grossing over 31 million dollars at the box office. The soundtrack earned Elvis his 13th gold album. The film is the story of Chad, a young man just released from the Army, who comes home to Honolulu to finally spread his wings and embark on the great adventure that is life. Resisting his father's attempt to get him to work at the family business, Chad gets a job as a tour guide and is hired by a group of girls to tour Hawaii. The first part of the film was made on Oahu as Chad does his best to show all a good time, getting along with everyone except a snobby little rich girl named Ellie.

The name "Blue Hawaii" is related only indirectly to the 1961 Elvis Presley film of the same name, and apparently derives instead from the film's title song, a hit composed by Leo Robin for the 1937 Bing Crosby film Waikiki Wedding. It was Yee who named the drink which, along with the films and songs, many other tropical drinks he invented, and tiki bars such as Trader Vic, did much to popularize a faux Hawaiian tiki culture, both in Hawaii itself and in the Mainland. The era was immediately pre-statehood, a time when Hawaii was thought of by most Americans as playground for the rich. Tourism and development was already significant, but all centered around Waikiki and at only a small fraction of today's levels. About 100,000 visitors per year were visiting Hawaii, compared to seven million today.[3]

In the romantic comedy film "Blue Hawaii" (1961) Elvis plays the part of Chad Gates who returns to Hawaii from serving in the army two years. His parents want him to work in their pineapple plantation, but he wants to make a go of it on his own. His mom is played by Angela Lansbury. He works with his girlfriend, Maile Duval (Joan Blackman, who ... appeared in Elvis' tenth movie, "Kid Galahad"), as a tourist guide leading five girls around, and gets to sing and dance with Hawaiian women in grass skirts. He gets thrown in jail for fighting and fired from his new job, but everything works out and he gets married in the end. Scenery is beautiful and music enjoyable.

Blue Hawaii features significant changes over its predecessor, most notably sporting a new interface technology code-named "Prescott Skins." Prescott enables users to select different themes, or skins, for the AOL client. AOL currently has three Prescott skins available; each called a "room."
