[I]nspired by Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Gang of Four, and the Cure, South London art-punkers Bloc Party mix angular sonics with pop structures. Consisting of singer/guitarist Kele Okereke, guitarist Russell Lissack, bassist/singer Gordon Moakes, and drummer Matt Tong, the band was formerly known as Angel Range and Union before settling on Bloc Party. Okereke and Lissack met each other through mutual friends at the Reading Festival, and discovered that they had musical tastes as well as friends in common. Tong and Moakes soon joined their collaboration, and under the name Union, the quartet issued a demo in early 2003; later that year, they switched their name to Bloc Party. The group's demo and concerts began to attract attention from both the press and their peers; Okereke sent a copy of the demo to Franz Ferdinand, who invited them to play at the Domino tenth anniversary bash in fall 2003. Early the following year, the band released one of the demo's tracks, "She's Hearing Voices," as a single on Trash Aesthetics.

Coming into the A Weekend in the City era, Bloc Party have developed and evolved their sound. The style has been compared and/or inspired by such bands as Radiohead[8], U2, and Björk. Some of the most noticeable changes are the songs have come more layered and less raw. Some fans have complained from a lack of drums and "energy". With the release of Flux, Bloc Party's style has become even more diverse with the inclusion of electronic music. For the third album, Matt Tong has said, "I think our new stuff is going to be a lot less textured than the last record.

The drumming on Bloc Party songs is often influenced by the London dance and RnB scene whilst the guitar demonstrates typical indie sharpness with alternative panned chords and fast chord picking. To achieve their unique guitar style, BOSS echo effects equipment is implemented and is particularly apparent on the track \"Like Eating Glass\"

Bloc Party arrived so fast on the scene that little is known about the fouresome. Coming on the heels of Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads and Interpol can overshadow any talented newcomer but Bloc Party has managed to capture the hearts of danceclub DJ's and the more progressive radio station programmers across America. Audiophiles seeking a slightly more sophisticated record then that is being offered with bands such as the Strokes or White Stripes will be more satisfied with this major label debut.
