The National Federation of the Blind of Florida (NFBF) is a dynamic, growing organization. NFBF currently has sixteen chapters in the following Florida communities: Broward County, Daytona Beach, East Hillsborough County, Gainesville, Hernando/East Pasco Counties, Jacksonville, Miami-Dade, Orlando, Palm Beach, Pinellas County, Polk County, St. Lucie County, Tallahassee, and Tampa Bay. Additional chapters will be formed in the near future.

Father Thomas Carroll, who founded the Carroll Centre for the Blind, wrote Blindness: What It Is, What It Does and How to Live with It in 1961. In it, he characterized blindness in terms of 20 losses, and as the ‘death’ of the sighted individual.

Blind students may be visually impaired but their other senses are intact, so teachers of the blind should utilise the other senses. Learning a language is very much tied up with culture, exposure and experiences. Blind students may not be able to acquire exposure and experiences the same way as sighted students. So teachers of the blind may have to do a little more than other teachers. Bring experiences and exposure to the blind students.
