Insurance is considered a side bet in Blackjack. If the dealer has as Ace as his up card, you will be given the insurance option. You buy insurance to bet that the dealer has Blackjack. It allows you to protect your bet against the possibility that the dealer has Blackjack. Insurance costs an extra half of your initial bet which is wagered by clicking the Insurance button. If the dealer has Blackjack, you are paid 2 to 1 on your insurance bet.

Blackjack for Beginners - You are dealt two cards and the dealer is dealt two cards with the dealer only showing one. It is your job to get a higher amount than the dealer without going over the number 21. You have the option to 'hit' your two cards, which means you can ask for another card if you think it necessary to beat the dealer. A 'hit' signal at a Las Vegas or Macau table would be recognized by the dealer as a point or tapping on your cards with your index finger. You can ... choose to not accept any new cards if you think your hand is better than the dealer's. This would be signaled at a real table as with a waving finger gesture above your dealt hand.

Blackjack hands are assessed by what the point total is in your hand. You are playing against the dealer, not the other players so their hands are irrelevant. To beat the dealer's hand you must get higher points, have blackjack (21) or hope the dealer goes bust (over 21).

If you don’t have much Blackjack experience, it can be daunting stepping up to the tables for a game. You can... hide the fact of your inexperience very simply by remembering these straightforward rules. (Note - the rules of BlackJack will differ from area to area and from casino to casino, but the general principles are the same. When in doubt, ask!). A typical BlackJack table seats a dealer and up to 7 players. Starting with the dealer, the first seat on his left is ‘1st Base’, while the first seat on his right is referred to as 3rd Base.

The situation is often thought to be different when you have a Blackjack. The dealer is likely to offer you "even money" instead of the insurance bet. This is just the same old insurance bet with a simplification thrown in. Let's ignore the "even money" name, and look at what happens when you insure a Blackjack. Let's say you bet $10, and have a Blackjack. You would normally collect $15 for this, unless the dealer ... has a blackjack, in which case you push or tie.
