Black Sox Scandal: World Series
built 210 days ago
The Black Sox Scandal refers to a number of events that took place around and during the play of the 1919 World Series. More specifically, the name "Black Sox" refers to the Chicago White Sox team from that year. Eight members of the Chicago franchise were banned from baseball for throwing (intentionally losing) games.

The Black Sox scandal began with the World Series of October 1919, when eight members of the Chicago White Sox baseball team allegedly conspired to lose to the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds won five games to three at a time when the series could go to nine games. The scandal did not become public until almost a year later.... In August 1921, a jury found the accused conspirators innocent. Nonetheless, the day after their acquittal the newly appointed commissioner of major league baseball, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, banned them from professional baseball for the rest of their lives.

In what became known as the “Black Sox Scandal,” Jackson and seven other teammates of the heavily-favored Sox were accused of throwing the World Series for money. While they were found not-guilty in a court of law, Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis banned all eight from the game forever for their association with gamblers. Jackson, who many said was at the initial meeting with the players throwing the series, supposedly changed his mind and decided he wanted no part of it. His offensive statistics show that that is true, based on his series-leading .375 average. However, he did commit a couple of costly errors that led to Reds wins, a series the Reds would eventually win, 5-3.

The White Sox were a frequent contender during the early 20th century, winning 5 of the first 19 league pennants; but the team's fortunes dropped precipitously in the aftermath of the 1919 "Black Sox" scandal. After winning only one league championship in the years spanning 1920 to 2004, the team ended decades (and generations) of frustration in 2005 when it won its first World Series Championship since 1917. Gambling had been a presence in baseball long before the Black Sox scandal, and the major league team owners had done little to limit its influence. Rumors of a fix circulated before, during, and after the 1919 series, but the White Sox owner, Charles Comiskey, chose not to investigate them. Prompted by concerns of several journalists and baseball executives, a grand jury investigated allegations over a fixed 1920 season game, which eventually led to investigation of the 1919 series and the indictment of the eight players. None of the gamblers, such as the notorious Arnold Rothstein, who organized the fix, were charged with a crime... partly because documents were stolen and bribes paid.

Joe Jackson was banned from baseball in 1921 for his involvement in the 1919 ‘Black Sox’ scandal. Along with seven other White Sox players, he was accused of conspiring to lose the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds (even though he hit •375 in the series). According to folklore, a youngster pleaded to him, ‘Say it ain't so, Joe’ after his testimony at the ‘Black Sox’ trial. Regarded as baseball's greatest ‘natural’ hitter, he remains ineligible for election to the Hall of Fame due to his permanent banishment from baseball.
