The Black Sea (known as the Euxine Sea in antiquity) is an inland sea between southeastern Europe and Asia Minor. It is connected to the Mediterranean Sea by the Bosporus and the Sea of Marmara, and to the Sea of Azov by the Strait of Kerch.

The Black Sea is the world largest water body containing hydrogen sulfide. This is because it has an inflow of salty Mediterranean sea water in the deep layers and an inflow of river water on the top - so the sea is stratified and can not even be mixed by wind. This led to oxygen depletion in layers below 80 to 150 m and to the building of hydrogen sulfide.

[One] possible explanation comes from the colour of the Black Sea's deep waters. Being further north than the Mediterranean Sea and much less saline, the microalgae concentration is much richer, causing the dark colour. Visibility in the Black Sea is on average approximately five meters (5.5yd), as compared to up to thirty-five meters (38yd) in the Mediterranean.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline takes oil from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean instead of using tanker transport across the Black Sea and through the Bosporus. The pipeline was constructed by, and is managed by, the BTC consortium company.
