The Black Sea lies between southeastern Europe and Asia Minor. Excluding its northern arm, the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea occupies about 168,500 square miles (436,400 square kilometers). It is connected to the Aegean Sea through the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles, and has been of critical importance to regional commerce throughout the ages.

Besides its natural beauty, Black Sea region is worth to visit for its historical past and belongings. Fishing, coal, nuts and tea growing are the major sources for local economy. Compared to the Aegean or South Coast, The Black Sea coast is never crowded because even in the summer the sea water is chilly and the region recieves almost 9 months rain. For this reason not many local and foreign tourists do consider it as a leisure vacation destination.

Protecting the flora and fauna of the Black Sea is a race against time. The Action Plan calls for the conservation message to be taken to schools and local communities in the region. Unless everybody living around the coast understands the importance of the natural environment, many habitats and species will soon be lost and cannot be replaced.

The Black Sea region is thought to have been the original homeland of "Proto-Indo-European", the progenitor of the Indo-European language family, by some scholars. Others move the heartland further east towards the Caspian Sea.

There are many committed people who are convinced that the Black Sea Action Plan can save the Black Sea. Most specialists would agree but are quick to point out that the Plan itself is just a worthless piece of paper if it is not implemented. The current pressure on the financial resources of governments in the Black Sea region is enormous and the economic situation is less favourable than had been expected.
