Black Jack was trying to hold up a train by himself, but the conductor shot his left arm and Tom staggered off into the night. He was found at a water hole and surrendered peacefully, and was taken to a hospital in Santa Fe where he had his arm amputated. When his arm healed he was taken to Clayton for his trial. He pled innocent to most of the crimes he was charged with but, the judge found him guilty and he was sentenced to death by hanging. The hanging was delayed several times until law men heard about rumors that old gang members were going to free Black Jack, so they pushed up his hanging to April 26 1901. His hanging turned out to be a big town event.

The fully-functional Black Jack was created and designed by Chrysler's Mopar Underground SEMA design team, a group of in-house automotive enthusiasts who donate their time to the SEMA project vehicles. The Mopar Underground is overseen by Ralph Gilles, Vice President of Jeep/Truck & CFM Design, Chrysler LLC. Mopar Underground has been customizing Chrysler, Jeep(R) and Dodge production vehicles for the SEMA show since its creation in 2002. The team creates tricked, tuned and customized vehicle concepts meant to develop performance parts, accessories, customization and keep the Mopar spirit and passion alive.

In 2000, Black Jack had a median family income of $63,324. Many people in Black Jack make a good living. The bulk of the population of the city is doing well, with money to spend. Black Jack doesn't have a large share of its people below the poverty line. Significantly, more adults in the city have earned college degrees than have people in most other cities in Missouri.

The reason why Black Jack pursued the career in medicine, mentor and life-saver, he played as the young boy's father-figure after the tragedy struck. Kagemitsu Hazama, Black Jack's father, flew to Macau, China with his new wife, Renka, abandoning his son and his first wife. The boy suffered from paralysis in all four limbs and spent many lonely years in a wheelchair until he regained the use of them. Dr. Honma wrote a book about the miracle, as seen in "The Leg of an Ant".

Black Jack's daring escape from prison takes about two and a half pages of action. He first throws a guard into the electric fence so the other guards must shut off the power to free him. With the power down, Black Jack climbs the fence and dives into the nearby ocean. Once there, he stuffs his prison outfit with seaweed so the guards (and Aquaman who comes along just in time for this part of the escape) are distracted by recovering "Black Jack's body" from the ocean floor. And then he swims away.
