Black Conservatives sometimes state that they face the wrath of the Black community. Why shouldn’t they, when they have stylized themselves as castigators of the community? They speak and write no ideas the Black community has not heard. As a rule, Black Conservatives write to and for a White audience, and it is that audience that purchases their books.

Allen's answer told much about the GOP's two decade long court and tout of black conservatives. And that hasn't changed even when some of them embarrass the party with their shoot from the lip gaffes or fall from grace in a swirl of corruption and scandal. Allen has fit the bill on both counts. In 1982, he embarrassed the GOP with his slurs against gays and feminists, and two decades later during his confirmation hearing he didn't back away from them. He oddly claimed that the dictionary defined them as "odd or unusual"_ and he saw no reason to retract his slur. And now there's the allegation that he is a two-bit thief.

Unlike the government social services that black conservatives scorn, such programs work because the church knows the community. "Which kid is salvageable? Which struggling business could pay back a bank loan?" asks black thinker Glenn Loury. "These are discriminations that are beyond the ken of the bureaucracy." Soaries and his volunteers have moral authority and the capacity to induce shame in a world where both are in short supply. In Soaries's view, the church is one of the only forces that can inspire the ailing community to help itself. "Whether or not a person has hope, whether or not he is making plans for the future, whether or not a 16-year-old kid is buying his own casket—as they are doing in some communities—these are all spiritual issues, and they're at the heart of the crisis we're trying to address here."

During those 65 years, the liberals who ran the most visible black organizations omitted the ideas and contributions of black conservatives. Their focus was on integration. There is nothing wrong with integration, but it should have been the result, rather than the goal. The previous black movement, led by Booker T. Washington, had been about self-sufficiency and business development.

As Lewis Black points out, conservatives like Rupert Murdoch have a disturbing tendency to either devour and destroy what they consider liberal institutions or to create their own bastardized versions of existing ones.
